Warren Central’s boys wrestling team is preparing to take on the season with their first official meet on Nov. 20 at Warren Central High School. Being that it is the seniors’ last year here at Warren, they are getting themselves ready for their final season. There is a common goal between the seniors with them hoping to make it to the state championship.
“Throughout the season my entire career, I peaked at the right moments, but this year I feel like my talent, skill and how I work it’s carried me to this point where I feel like I’m able to go to state,” senior Aaron Durham said.
With this goal in mind, the seniors will also have to step up and inspire the underclassmen and help them further their careers as young wrestlers.
“With me being a senior on the team, I’m trying to do my best to lead the younger guys that are still trying to figure things out and get a good feel for the sport,” senior Terry Easley said.
Helping them try and be better leaders and push through the season like all teams they’ll need guidance from their coaches who have shaped other leaders over the years .
“Just providing opportunities to get better and have a good experience, being able to be there for them and answer questions and help guide them,” head wrestling coach Jacob O’Neill said
To ensure the season goes well, their plan as of now is to stay dedicated to the cause and have the boys set their sights on what they want to accomplish.
During their years in high school leading up to this, the seniors were able to build relationships with the other guys on the wrestling team and were able to enjoy their time with their team.
“My favorite memories come from being with the wrestling team like when we travel and during [our] tournaments,” Easley said. “There isn’t a specific moment during the season, but whenever I’m with my teammates we get to chill and travel together and it’s always fun.”
The four years in high school go by incredibly fast and are not always nearly long enough to do everything students want to do.
Even though time went by fast, senior wrestlers said the time spent on the team was worth the while.
“I always wish I would have done more [and] also tried to push a little harder, use my brain a little more and [have] wrestled a better match, but at the end of the day I gave it all I had so I can graduate and lead the team with no regrets,” Durham said.
